Very few members of that original group remain on the flagship show.

Today, Gold Rush revolves around Parker Schnabel, Tony Beets and Rick Ness, while many former stars have either stepped away, moved into spin-offs or built mining careers elsewhere.
Todd Hoffman was the man who helped launch the series, but he left Gold Rush in 2018 after eight seasons.
His exit looked like the end of an era, yet Discovery later brought him back for Hoffman Family Gold in 2022. Hoffman has since said family was one reason he originally walked away and that he did not plan to return to the flagship.
However, speculation returned in March 2025 when he revealed he had bought a gold mine in the Yukon and was pursuing another. Despite the rumors, no Gold Rush comeback has been announced.
Dave Turin also left after years with Hoffman’s crew, following tensions and a physical altercation with Trey Poulson.
But Turin did not disappear from Discovery. He later fronted Dave Turin’s Lost Mine and America’s Backyard Gold, turning his Gold Rush exit into a new television chapter.
Fred Lewis had a quieter departure.
The former Special Forces medic operated his own mining crew from Seasons 11 through 13 before stepping back in 2023 after struggling with poor ground and weak returns.

Rick Ness’ story was very different.
After leaving Parker Schnabel’s crew and becoming his own mine boss, Ness disappeared from mining for more than a year.
He later spoke openly about depression, drug use, grief following his mother’s death and serious financial problems.
Ness eventually sold his late mother’s house to help fund his return and made his comeback during Season 14.
By Season 15, he was back at Duncan Creek and determined not to waste another opportunity.
His return showed why not every Gold Rush disappearance should be treated as a permanent exit.
The franchise has grown far beyond one series.
Freddy Dodge and Juan Ibarra moved into Mine Rescue, Dustin Hurt became a key figure on White Water, Turin received his own show and Hoffman returned with Hoffman Family Gold.
Kevin Beets also broke away from father Tony’s operation to become an independent mine boss rather than leaving the franchise altogether.
That brings Gold Rush to Season 17 with Parker, Tony and Rick still at the center.

Parker enters the season chasing another huge gold target while facing problems involving water access.
Tony continues expanding his operation and brings brother Nick Beets in as foreman.
Rick returns facing what Discovery has described as a life-altering health diagnosis, although the exact condition has not been revealed.
Todd Hoffman currently has no confirmed return, Dave Turin appears to have moved on from the flagship, and Fred Lewis remains away from full-time Gold Rush mining.
Others are gone permanently.
John Schnabel died in 2016, James Harness in 2014 and Dakota Fred Hurt in July 2023.
Gold Rush has survived all of those losses and departures.
When Hoffman walked away in 2018, Discovery rebuilt the series around Parker, Tony and eventually Rick.
Sixteen years later, the cast looks very different, but the basic gamble remains unchanged: spend enormous amounts of money today and hope enough gold is waiting underneath the ground tomorrow.
